Abstract


Ceramic art for daily use brings art into daily life with its practical function, which is the prerequisite of its meaningful existance. However, the practical function of ceramic art for daily life and its aesthetic expression form the unity of opposites. This thesis starts with the emergence and development background of ceramic art for daily use and puts forward the comprehension to its concept and connotation. Based on the comprehension, this thesis firstly expounds the content of the material function and the spiritual function of ceramic art for daily use, as well as the relationship between the two functions, and then emphasizes the material function as the prerequisite of the meaningful existance of ceramic art for daily use. Secondly, the form of ceramic art for daily use is discussed from the two aspects of shape and decoration by analyzing the practical design. Thirdly, connect the generality of the theory of form and function with the speciality of the ceramic art for daily use to demonstrate that its form and function is unified and how its function conditions its form. Finally, the independence and freedom degree of ceramic art for daily use is expounded, concluding that the form of ceramic art for daily use is still relatively free in spite of the restrict of its material function. In order to get a nice design, it is not necessary to sacrifice the material function. To achieve it, either the improvement of material function or the creativity of some aspect of form is probably efficient. The research in this thesis aims at playing a role in guiding the design of ceramic art for daily use, realizing the perfect combination of form and function, and enriching the creative ideas of ceramic art for daily use.
