ObjectiveTo observe the characteristic of the fMRI brain map in healthy adult undergoing hand-moving (clenching and relaxing the fist) and needling at acupuncture point (including real acupoint and sham acupoint), for exploring the essence of the fMRI brain map in patients suffering from motor dysfunction by cerebrovascular accidents, and exploring the essence of the central modulating mechanism of the treatment by acupuncture.Materials and MethodsTwelve healthy volunteers have been choosed to partake the experience. Everyone has accomplished the following five duties separately:(1) Only clenching and relaxing the fist of left hand;(2) Only clenching and relaxing the fist of right hand;(3) Clenching and relaxing the fist of both hands at one time;(4) Needling at sham acupoint (lateral area of the left leg 20mm from Zusanli);(5) Needling at real acupoint (Left Zusanli). The data have been analyzed statistically using Analysis of Functional NeuroImages (AFNI) software (edition: 200802011144).In the condition of F (6, 1121), P=0.005, the signal which is bigger than three voxels is retained, and is considered the activated signal. These actived signals organize the activated brain areas.Results(1)Only clenching and relaxing the fist of left hand has gained the following brain functional areas: Right Precentral Gyrus, Right Culmen, Right Superior Temporal Gyrus, Right Parahippocampal Gyrus, Right Superior Frontal Gyrus, Right Medial Frontal Gyrus, Right Superior Parietal Lobule, Right Middle Frontal Gyrus, Left Culmen, Left Precuneus, and Left Superior Frontal Gyrus;(2)Only clenching and relaxing the fist of right hand has gained the following Brain functional areas: Left Precentral Gyrus, Left Postcentral Gyrus, Right Culmen, and Right Medial Frontal Gyrus;(3)Clenching and relaxing the fist of both hands at one time has gained the following Brain functional areas: Left Postcentral Gyrus, Left Precentral Gyrus, Right Postcentral Gyrus, and Right Precentral Gyrus;(4)Needling at sham acupoint (lateral area of the left leg 20mm from Zusanli) has gained the following Brain functional areas: Left Precentral Gyrus and Left Postcentral Gyrus;(5)Needling at real acupoint (Left Zusanli) has gained the following Brain functional areas: Right Precentral Gyrus, Right Superior Frontal Gyrus, Right Medial Frontal Gyrus, Left Precentral Gyrus and Left Postcentral Gyrus.Conclusions(1)Hand-moving (clenching and relaxing the fist) has its own specific brain areas activated.(2)The brain areas activated by clenching and relaxing the fist of single hand are governed primarily by the opposite side, and contain not only the motor areas, but also the supplementary motor areas;(3)As compared with the right handedness, the brain areas activated by clenching and relaxing the fist of left hand are more widespread;(4)The brain areas activated by clenching and relaxing the fist of both hands at one time concentrate in the motor areas of both cerebral hemispheres;(5)Acupuncture has its own specific brain areas activated;(6)Acupoint has the position specificity; the accurate acupoint selection plays an important role in the clinical acupuncture therapy;(7)Acupoint has the function specificity; the accurate acupoint selection in view of the different sickness plays an important role in the clinical acupuncture therapy;(8)Needling at Left Zusanli has activated the brain areas, which are also activated during clenching and relaxing the fist. The result explores the essence of the treatment by acupuncture in patients suffering from motor dysfunction by cerebrovascular accidents.
