Abstract


The lucky imaging (LI) technique can effectively reduce the turbulence-induced imaging blur restoration and achieve high imaging resolution when observing extended objects with ground-based telescope under anisoplanatic conditions. This technique subdivides a sequence of short-exposure images, and then selects the better sub-images based on the values of image quality evaluation. Through combining these lucky images with correlation registration method extended object’s image will become significantly sharper. In this thesis, the basic theory of atmospheric turbulence anisoplanatic imaging is presented firstly. The characteristic of anisoplanatic imaging, especial optical imaging resolution and the probability to obtain“lucky frame”are also discussed. Secondly, the basic principle and process flow of LI for extended objects are introduced with the key techniques, some main problems and its corresponding solutions. At last, the preliminary measurement experiment of atmospheric coherence length and the experimental observation of extended objects are designed and implemented. The experimental results obtained with LI indicate that LI for extended objects may result in substantial improvement in image resolution under highly anisoplanatic conditions, and choosing the telescope aperture, exposure time, size of sub-image and selecting scale to match the turbulent and illumination conditions may get better results. The building of the experimental observation system has laid a basis for further extended objects lucky imaging technique studying.
