Abstract


The complex situation of network, the different client equipments of processing and display bring the great challenge to the video coding. So the video coding needs not only have the excellent rate–distortion performance, good image quality and relatively lower computational complexity, but also provide the mechanism for the network transmission. The scalable video coding and transcoding for the video are the methods that can overcome the above-mentioned problems. Which is better has always been a hot issue discussed by the academia and the industry. Hence, we need to develop the effective evaluation methods of their performance urgently.Considering the changes of the bitrate, spatial resolution, framerate for the video streaming and the client equipments which have different adaptability and error-tolerance, analyze the rate-distortion performance of the scalable video coder and the video transcoder under the same hardware environment and relevant coding parameter. Through measuring the time of the scalable video streaming extraction and the video streaming transcoding, both the computational complexity are analyzed. The scheme based on NS2 for the IP network video transmission quality evaluation is given. The video transmission of the scalable video coding and video transcoding streaming is realized on the simulation platform. Though the subjective and objective video quality standards, we have evaluated the video image quality of the scalable video coding and video transcoding. As shown in the experiment, the peak signal to noise ratio of the two techniques has the difference between 0.05dB and 0.52dB in average, as far as the video image quality of the scalable video coding and the video transcoding for network transmission. But compared with video transcoding, the scalable video coding in average has 1.5 to 3.2dB gain in the rate–distortion performance under given range of the bitrate, and the computational complexity is relatively lower. Thus, it can be preliminarily judged that, in the aspect of the network adaptability, the scalable video coding has the significantly better performance than video transcoding.
