Abstract

Because of its potential applications in dense wavelength division multiplexing, component testing and optical sensing and so on, multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser has attracted intense investigations recently. However, some special schemes must be utilized to suppress the the mode competition induced by homogeneous broadening. As one of the possible methods to prohibit mode competition, four-wave mixing has apparent advantages such as more output wavelengths, high output power flatness and high stability. A lot of experiments have been carried out to investigate this method, but up to present, theoretical work in this field is limited. Therefore, in this paper, a theoretical model is proposed to study the behavior of this type of lasers.First, the three-level energy model is set up, and the propagation equation is derived under one dimensional approximation. Since the lifetime of 4I13/2 level is much longer than that of 4I11/2 level, the model is simplified to two-level energy system. Then the model is generalized to cover the situation when there exists multiple waves and multiple pumps.Second, the coupled equations decribing multiple four-wave mixing process is derived. To deal with the stiff character of the coupled equations, power normalization is exploited to reduce the stiffness and a predictor-corrector method is utilized to solve the equations numerically. In this paper, fourth-order Adams-Bashforth explicit integration method is used as the predictor, and three-order Adams-Moulton implicit integration method as the corrector. Based on the numerical model, the dynamic process of four-wave mixing is simulated. Finally, the theoretical model describing the multiwavelent erbium-doped fiber laser is obtained though treating the four-wave mixing as the dynamic border condition of the propagation equations. Using this model, the operation of four-wave mixing assisted multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated theoretically. The simulation results also show that net cross section curves and four-wave mixing efficiency will affect the power flatness of output spectrum. In the simulation, 19 lines with power difference <3dB are obtained. The essentials of model competition suppressing method are also discussed from the mathematical and physical aspects.
