Abstract

Silicone rubber and EPDM all have excellent anti-aging performance. However, the silicone rubber exhibits low mechanical properties while the EPDM exhibits low vulcanizing rate, high viscosity and poor processing property. Blending the two rubbers together may make up their deficiencies for each other and lead to blends with better performance than the individual one.The key issue to rubber blending is to achieve co-vulcanization among the blended components and ensure the interface bonding. In this thesis, the blending of silicone rubber with EPDM has been studied. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-bis-(ter-butylperoxy) hexane (DBPH) were selected as vulcanizing agents and bismaleimide (BMI) was adopted as cross-linking agent; coupling agent KH570 (γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane) was added to the blends as compatilizer. The effect of the additives on the vulcanization and mechanical properties of the two rubbers and their blends were investigated and the blending formula was optimized. The co-vulcazation in the blends was analyzed on DSC and the glass transitions of the blends were analyzed on DMA.The optimum DCP amount is 1.0-2.5 phr for silicone rubber and 1.0-2.0 for EPDM; while the optimum DBPH is 1.0-2.0 phr for silicone rubber and 1.25-2.5 phr for EPDM. For all the prepared samples DCP gave higher mechanical properties than DBPH. BMI retarded the vulcanizing rate of silicone rubber but promoted the rate of EPDM. DSC analysis indicated that BMI would make a few silicone rubber and EPDM react simultaneously before the main cross-linking reaction. Furthermore, BMI pushed the exothermic peak of silicone rubber 2℃higher and depressed the exothermic peak 3℃lower, made the two peaks overlay partially. For the optimum samples vulcanized by DBPH, the tensile strength and tear strength of the blends could be enhanced 14.8 % and 6.0 %, respectively, by addition of BMI. For the sample vulcanized by DCP the tensile and tear strength could be increased 19.7 % and 6.8 %, respectively, compared to the blend without BMI. BMI can lead to co-vulcanization in silicone rubber/EPDM blends and improve the performance of the blend.
