Abstract

Due to their high catalytic efficiency, good stability and reusability, sulfonated carbonaceous solid-acid catalysts have attracted much attention in past several years especially in biomass refinery. There are a variety of methods to prepare sulfonated carbonaceous solid acid catalysts, the commonly used method is to sulfonate a partially-carbonized char. This method is relatively complicated, requiring high temperature and inert atmosphere, and the surface sulfonic groups are easy to be leached. Therefore we need to find a new synthetic path in a mild, simple way to synthesize highly efficient sulfonated carbonaceous solid acid catalysts. The first part of this paper is to design a new synthetic route to prepare a sulfonated carbonaceous material with high acid strength and adjustable acid density. It is synthesized by a two-step method, a’hydro-char’was firstly produced by heating the mixture of glucose and benzyl chloride at 180℃and then sulfonated with concentrated sulfuric acid to generate sulfonated carbon materials. The sulfonic density can be easily tailored by tuning the ratio of glucose to benzyl chloride. The catalyst exhibited higher catalytic activity and stability in the acetalization reaction, esterification reaction, and the dehydration of sugar, compared to other conventional solid acid catalysts, such as beta zeolite and sulfonated resin amberlyst-15 etc. It is worth mentioning that other monosaccharides, polysaccharides, and even cellulose can be used as starting materials to prepare solid acids with different characteristics. In the second part, we examined the catalytic performances of the carbonaceous material in the synthesis of 4,4’,4"-triaminotriphenylmethane in detail. In this study, we investigated the catalytic activities of a variety of solid acid catalysts in the synthesis of 4,4’,4"-triaminotriphenylmethane using aniline and paraaminobenzaldehyde as raw materials under the protection of nitrogen. We optimized reaction conditions, such as the ratio of reactants, the loading of catalyst, reaction temperature and reaction time etc, and compared our catalyst with conventional ones. The results showed that our synthetic carbonaceous solid acid catalyst had the highest activity. This shows that this catalyst has great potential in a variety of acid catalyzed reaction.
