Abstract

Carbon Black possesses the huge specific surface area, and the particles are so easy to aggregate together that we can hardly disperse it in organic, inorganic and polymer matrix uniformly. Among all the modification methods, grafting polymers is the most efficient. In this paper, we used chemical grafting and radiation grafting method etc. to carry out the modification, and then followed by the characterization of FT-IR, TEM, SEM, TGA, DLS etc. to analyse the structure and the performance of Carbon Black. With potassium persulfate as initiator, we prepared Poly(p-styrene sulfonic acid) grafted carbon black. After grafting, the aggregates size of CB reduced, and as -SO3H stretched in the matrix, increasing the steric hindrance between the particles, thus the dispersible stabilities improved. Due to the existence of copious sulfonic groups on the surface, It can be used as solid acid catalyst for esterification reaction to make biodiesel. The successful application of biodiesel catalyst is of great importance to the expansion of CB usage and the development of new clean energy.Hydroxymethyl CB was prepared by condensation reaction between CB and formaldehyde in alkaline condition, followed by the generation of reactive radical with cerium ammonium nitrate as initiator, thereby initiating the grafting polymerization of acrylamide, and the optimization of experiment was carried out. The biggest grafting ratio was 9.5% and after grafting, the particle size was reduced from 578 nm to 210 nm,and also, the dispersible stability improved. In addition, we also usedγ-ray radiation to make acrylamide grafted onto CB surface. The characterization results shows that the grafting yield can be reached to 8.9%. And after grafting, the particle size reduced from 578 nm to 278.5 nm;and also the dispersible stability improve significantly.
