Abstract

Electrically small antennas are a critical enabling technology for a variety of wireless applications. Recently, some metamaterial-based and metamaterial-inspired electrically small antennas are presented. These antennas are shown to be naturally matched to 50Ωsource, i.e., without the introduction of a matching network. It is verified that these antennas significantly improve the radiation resistance. As a result, these antennas are efficient, easy to build and inexpensive. This paper researches on the metamaterial-inspired high efficiency electrically small antenna, including three following parts:First, this paper summarizes the process of development from metamaterial-based to metamaterial-inspired electrically small antennas.Later, a novel efficient electrically small antenna is presented. The design details and radiation characteristics of the antenna system at 2.7GHz are reported. This paper explains the reason why these electrically small antennas can match the feed source to realize self-resonance and analyzes the principle of improving radiation resistance in detail. It is demonstrated that this novel electrically small antenna has extremely high radiation efficiency. This paper also points out that how do the key structure parameters effect resonance frequency, so we can control the resonance frequency in some way. These parameters analysis validates the equivalent circuit theory. Finally, a dual-band high efficiency electrically small antenna is simulated. This antenna can work at two frequencies, while maintains high efficiency.
