Abstract


In order to overcome the drawback of classical fixed boundary models, a finite element model of structure-foundation system has been suggested in this paper for the earthquake response analysis of frame structures.This paper presents a model of transmitting boundary system, which is used in the structure seismic response analysis. In the model, the components of upper frame structures, such as beams and columns, are simulated with plane four-node quadrilateral parametric elements, while the foundation is the use of four-node plane strain isoparametric discrete. In the structure - foundation finite element model, border in side of the foundation adopted with bundles, and the bottom of the adopted with modified viscous transmitting boundary. According to the fluctuations in elastic medium theory, the use of minimum potential energy principle is derived to modified viscous transmitting boundary stiffness matrix and damping matrix. Through a given seismic waves, compared with the results of local transmitting boundary, the modified viscous transmitting boundary model proves more effective.
