Abstract


Calvino advocated five literary values in a speech written by Norton notes, " Six Memos for the Next Millennium", which are Lightness, Quickness, Exactitude, Visibility and Multiplicity, these five talk are values of the model for the future of literature envisaged by Calvino.This article is divided into four main sections, the first major on the contents and characteristics of the five values. Lightness is a living response to the heavy presence, it is committed to reducing the weight; Quickness requires a very short text to describe the very long story in the real world, it has a clear logic distinctive style and rhythm; Exactitude requires a clear plan to make a clear text structure in literature, including exact in the text of the plot structure, language, visual image; Visibility emphasizes the importance of image in the text, which focuses on leading the human imagination ability to create a perfect image; Multiplicity is inclusive literature to describe things in detail.The second part analyses the background and the underlying reasons of Calvino’s literature values for the future:Calvino’s writing was in the context of post-modernism, at the same time he was trying to get out of the plight of post-modernism literature; the rich essence of Italy literary tradition marked Calvino’s creation and ideas with the brand, while Calvino’s works also contains a sense of the universe;with his own creation, Calvino drew experience from the literary theory of various European and American writers, and found the classical standard in the interpretation of the classic literary works.The third part discusses the profound intrinsic values and rationality of Calvino’s literature values for the future: it is dialectical and comprehensive in the whole, when talking about a value without denying the opposite values, five values have a common and could explain each other; it is in line with the requirements of human mind, and it would be more coincident with the literature of human needs with the development of the times; it’s a promotion and maintenance, looking at the changes of literature in the development ; it reflects Calvino’s unique concept, world view and cosmology, which containing a noble universe sentiment.The fourth part affirms the positive significance of Calvino’s literature values for the future: the form of speech makes the theoretical expression more lively and conducive to the spread of literary thought; it can be a reference and motivity to literary development in future and promote the development of the future literature; its significance also lies in its innovation, it captures the essence of literature, showing a broad perspective of the writer and the spirit of exploration and tolerance; it grasps a span of values in the literature in a long time ,it seize the literary values in the times and changes, and look to the future, with the pursuit of literature the ultimate significance and the ideal situation.At the same time, there are some limitations, such as the speech is and the theory is unfinished, fragmented;several values of a clear definition had not been made, which resulting in theory faintly. But the disadvantages is secondary,Calvino’s literary values for the future tells us not only the literary ideas, it aslo conveys a kind of revelation telling us to think about the future of literature, exploring the mysteries of literature.
