Abstract


With the rapid development of various communication networks, multimedia technologies have been widely used in people’s daily life. Among them, video compression technology is widely applied. As a new video compression standard, H.264/AVC adopts many advanced technologies in the space, time and transform domain to improve coding performance, it can be used for broadcast television, video storage, video monitoring, real-time video conference and so on. However, with the coding performance improved, it also brings increased coding complexity. Thus, in order to use H.264/AVC in some scenes that require real-time encoding, the encoder needs to be optimized.DM642 is one of DSP products developed by Texas Instruments (TI) company. It is mainly used for audio and video applications. There are many kinds of peripheral interfaces integrated in it, such as EMAC port, video ports, audio ports, I2C and so on. DM642 can provide comprehensive video solutions. With it’s high-performance internal hardware structure including two level cache and it’s multimedia instruction set, DM642 is more suitable for executing H.264 encoder.In this paper, we mainly describe how to take advantage of DM642 in transplanting and optimizing the H.264 encoder based on the research of H.264 Standard. The main work of this paper is: firstly, the fast motion estimation algorithm used in H.264 named UMHexagonS is optimized. Experiments show that, the motion estimation time that the optimized algorithm used is reduced by 15% compared to the original algorithm.Then, the paper analyzes the other parts of the encoder in depth. We rewrite the C language in the encoder with optimized linear assembly language and inline functions, in this way, the executing time of original code is reduced. At the same time, the paper also takes into account the working way of two level cache.Some arrangements are used on the encoder’s code and data, and the QDMA are used to move the video data between internal RAM and external RAM.Through the methods used above, we have a tradeoff between the complexity and performance of our H.264 encoder, and we get an efficient H.264 encoder in the end. Test results show that the encoding speed of our encoder can meet the requirements of real-time video monitoring for video sequences with QCIF and CIF size.
