Abstract


With the development and the improvement of the speech act theory, linguists havemade extensive studies of the realization of specific speech acts, such as greeting,compliment, refusal and apology. Comparative studies between different languages havealso been made in specific speech acts, but there have been few studies on the speech act ofcomplaining. The speech act of complaints can be classified into direct complaints andindirect complaints. And this thesis focuses on the study of the realization patters andresponse strategies of indirect complaints based on both quantitative and qualitative study.The thesis makes a contrastive study on the realization patters and response strategiesof the speech act of indirect complaints between native Chinese speakers and native Englishspeakers, based on data collected by means of DCT with reference to social variables suchas social power, social distance and level of speaker’s expectation. The research resultindicates that there are similarities as well as differences between the two groups in therealization patterns and response strategies. When employing the speech act of indirectcomplaints, the two groups are definitely influenced by these three social variables, butcomparatively speaking, native Chinese speakers are more sensitive to social power, whilenative English speakers are more sensitive to social distance and level of speaker’sexpectation. The author also explores the causes of these differences in specific situationsfrom the cultural perspective.
