Abstract


The aim of the study is to the relation between peer relationship and loneliness in the children with different types of social withdrawal. 762 children in 4-6 grade from three schools participated this study. First of all, Revised Class Play was used to classify children into four groups (passive withdrawal, active withdrawal, mixed withdrawal and the control children), and then peer acceptance, loneliness and social withdrawal behavior of children were measured with the method of social-metric nomination and questionnaires.The results showed:1.There was significant difference in gender distribution of social withdrawal, that is, in the passive withdrawal, the number of boys was less than girls; while in the active withdrawal the number of boys was more than girls. But there was no difference in mixed withdrawal. Withdrawal children and their sub-type of distribution on grades were not different.2.There was significant gender difference on peer relationship of social withdrawal children, and the peer relationship of the withdrawal girls was significantly better than that of the withdrawal boys. There was significant difference in types of social withdrawal on peer relationship. Meanwhile, peer’s relationships on grade, gender and withdrawal types have significant interaction. The active withdrawal and mixed withdrawal of boys increase with grades, while the two types social withdrawal of girls decrease with grades.3.There was no significant difference between different grades and gender. There was significant difference in types of social withdrawal on loneliness of children and interaction between grades and types of significant withdrawal. The active withdrawal and mixed withdrawal of children increase first, then reduced. The passive withdrawal and none withdrawal of children decrease first, then added with grades.4. The partial mediator effect of peer relationships between passive withdrawal and loneliness was confirmed.The partial mediator effect of peer relationships between active withdrawal and loneliness was confirmed.5. In the whole model, the partial mediator effect of peer relationships between passive withdrawal and loneliness was confirmed. The full mediator effect of peer relationships between active withdrawal and loneliness was confirmed. The results showed that the whole model for two groups of children are applicable.
