Abstract


In Chinese history of literature, novellas and novels and short story was paid much attention. However, mininovel was at the attached position, and people paid little attention to it, even didn’t regard it as independent literary style. But along with the development of contemporary mininovel, its status has been changing gradually, arousing some researcher’s attention slowly. Up to now, the numbers of mininovels is too huge to count, but it still lacks relative studies about mininovel, no matter on the works of mininovel or on its theories. This paper tries to analyze the characteristics of mininovel creation under the context of mass culture. Thus, it fills the gap of studies of mininovel creation, and may simultaneously enrich the aspects of mininovel study, especially promotes the theorization and systematization of mininovel study.The contemporary mininovel is different from traditional mininovel, and also from short stories. It is an independent literary style which grows under the context of mass culture, and has close relation with mass culture. It is short, but there is greatness in trivialness. It can succeed in transmitting great information within short length to express rich emotion. Mininovel grows under the background of fast changing social life after reform and open up policy, and reflects the change of people’s thought and values during social transition times.This paper intends to systematically elaborate mininovel creation under the context of mass culture from four aspects. The introduction part sums up the development of mininovel, as well as the internal and external reasons of its development in new times. The first part of the body introduces mass culture, generally concludes that mass culture exists as the context of mininovel creation, and introduces the relation between mininovel and mass culture, foreshadowing further development in the following part. The second part intensively describes different social life in mininovels from themes it concerns. The third part summarizes common character images in mininovels. The fourth part emphasizes the narrative skills utilized in its creation process.Generally speaking, the contemporary mininovel is a kind of independent literary style, having its own characteristics and adept ways of expression. Its creation also corresponds to the development of society, and can arouse reader’s interest in reading. Nowadays, elite literature has been marginalized, thus, mininovel creation cannot be neglected. It not only takes traditional medium as its routes of transmission, moreover, it also takes present popular transmitting vectors, such as network, cell pones. Today, literature is commercializing. The study of mininovel can approach the living condition of literature much closer; also inquire about reader’s demand. Studies of the mininovel creation under the context of mass culture have strong practical significance.
