Abstract


In an article entitled“Advice on Strengthening the Construction of College Counselor Team”which was issued by the Ministry of Education, it is pointed out that“counselors and class advisors, an indispensable part of college teaching faculty, are not only a backbone force in conducting college moral and ideological education , but also function as guides and mentors for students’healthy development”. However, according to a survey, the effects of college counselors’moral education work, which directly affects the quality of talents training, are not satisfactory at all. So to study and analyze existing problems and causes and to explore actively corresponding measures are not only just in line with the inevitable trend of professionalism of college counselors, but are of great realistic significance. This thesis consists of three parts:The first part mainly talks about the history of college counselors and the characteristics of their moral education work. At the beginning, the history of college counselors is introduced. In our country, this team was founded in 1952 as a team of political instructors. Later they became political counselors and changed into counselors, who have been serving our country until the present day. Then the definition of college counselor which is adopted in this thesis is presented: college counselors refer to those teachers who are responsible for some work concerning college students’psychological growth and ideological development, such as providing guidance for the political , ideological and quality education of college students; getting involved in the construction and management of classes; providing students with career guidance and psychological service and so on. At the end of this part, characteristics of their moral education work are elaborated: this work is started earlier, lasts longer and has a wider outreach than any other kind of work concerning students. In a word, their moral education work is both necessary and feasible.The second part focuses on problems existing in college counselors’moral education work and their corresponding causes. Through a series of interviews with 37 college counselors form three universities located in Jinan, it was found that, although on account of ages and genders, their answers might vary from person to person, they almost had reached on a consensus about the existing problems and corresponding causes of their moral education work. Problems include the blocked work channels, inadequate awareness of the importance of moral education, old-fashioned working concept, inappropriate working manners and outdated working contents. As for corresponding causes, they have been categorized into two types: external and internal causes. The former are mainly related to the immature system building in universities, such as the incomplete training and evaluation system for college counselors. The latter are related to qualities of counselors, one of which is the lack of relevant knowledge about pedagogy and moral education, which usually contributes to their failure to build prestige among students and carry out their work effectively.In the third part, several countermeasures have been proposed. On one hand, universities need to perfect various working mechanisms, such as to set up access system for college counselors, to perfect their training system, to integrate the existing working resources and to construct incentive mechanism and development mechanism. On the other hand, college counselors need to cultivate their capability for moral education work and raise their own working level of conducting moral education by learning and accumulating relevant knowledge, exploring efficient working manners, establishing harmonious relationships with students and setting up prestige among them. In summary, this thesis has not only revealed existing problems and their corresponding causes in college counselors’moral education work, but also put forward many countermeasures in the hope of offering reference for improvement and further development of moral education work in universities.
