Abstract

Meridians and acupoints is the main course required to be learned by majors in acupuncture and massage of traditional Chinese medical science. It lays emphasis on both theoretical knowledge and students’practical ability. This course requires students to master the components and distribution of the Meridian system of human body as well as the diseases controlled by the system. Students also need to know the channel tropism, location and healing effects of meridians and acupoints therapy, master commonly used acupoints and know about newly progress in this field. However, the investigation reveals that actual teaching of the course gives priority to theories over practice, and that there exists the problems of lack of laboratory equipment and backwardness in practical methods, which not only lowers students’ interest in active learning, but also prevents their development in practical ability and creativity. In this situation, virtual experiment, as a new type of experimental teaching methods, plays a significant role in solving the problem of the lack of experimental equipments, stimulating learning motivation, and cultivating students’experimental awareness and practical ability. Therefore, the author proposes a web-based virtual experimental design of three-dimensional body meridians and acupoints, aiming to provide a digital arena for the teaching of the theory and practice of meridians and acupoints. Therefore, on the basis of a careful study of excellent course and experiment syllabuses as well as guiding books for practice in many colleges of traditional Chinese medicine, the thesis fully applies cognitive learning theory and the design thought of teaching system to the sutle and scientific design of the course of meridian and acupoints. In the meantime, with the guidance of Gestalt theory and learning transfer theory, the thesis designs the web-based virtual three-dimensional body meridians and acupoints experiment by using Java, VRML and Maya technology. In the design process, the complexity of modeling the human body is facilitated. The strategies of constructing the model of meridians and acupoints are presented, realizing three-dimensional visualization. Besides, the difficulity in the interaction of three-dimensional scenes is solved. Furthermore, it breaks through the C /S model of traditional three-dimensional virtual experiments, allowing the Web-based transmission, which makes learners visit at all times and places. The thesis is composed of five chapters:Chapter 1 analyzes the current problems of meridians and acupoints in teaching and practice and introduces the present research situation of virtual experiment and virtual reality technology in meridians and acupoints both at home and abroad, on the basis of which, the goals, aims and significance of this research are proposed.Chapter 2 first analyzes the nature of the course of meridians and acupoints, teaching objectives and teaching tasks. Then, it introduces the theories which guide the design of the virtual three-dimensional human meridian experiment. Finally, it discusses the application of the theories to the design.Chapter 3 discusses the connotation of the the virtual three-dimensional human meridian experiment, describing the system design of the three-dimensional body meridians and acupoints virtual experiment from the four aspects of the development process design, functional design, the structure of system design and interface design.Chapter 4 systematically describes the design process of the three-dimensional human meridians and acupoints virtual experiment and introduces the key technologies involved, such as the interaction of Applet with Servlet, Servlet access to Web databases and the integration of Applet with VRML.Chapter 5 summarizes the main results and significance of the study, and the implications for further research is also mentioned.
