Abstract


Film has become an important part of our life. It helps us know more about the world and brings us entertainment and life instructions. An appreciation of English film is an effective way to promote the understanding between people in different countries. The film script always conveys implied meaning instead of literal meaning of the words the characters speak. It is not easy for people to get the implied meaning of the words when they are watching the movie. This thesis will discuss the implied meanings of the film script of Roman Holiday.To enhance the readers’ sense of style and sensitivity to film English scripts and help the readers understand the implied meaning of the film in a more efficient way, I have explored the style markers and their stylistic effects of film English texts at the phonological, lexical, syntactical levels by using a stylistic approach. A pragmastylistic approach can apply the pragmatic insights and explanations to film texts so as to examine the internal relationships between characters as well as the characters’ individual speaking style and their intentions.This thesis mainly discusses the film script of Roman Holiday from the following three aspects. At the phonology level, the study shows that the film language is quite similar to daily conversation. At the lexical level, one of the most obvious lexical features of the film conversation is that many simple and common words are used. At the syntactic level, the sentences tend to be short and loose. Through detailed analysis of violation of the Cooperative Principle, the author studied the deeper meaning of the language and the stylistic effects achieved through the maxim violation. It is expected that this study may help the audience understand and appreciate the implied meaning in English films in a better way. This study also contributes to serve as a reference for further modern English study, translation and so on.
