Abstract


Taiijiquan is one of China’s cultural legacies, has a long history in China and a broad popular foundation. Because taijiquan is a fusion of fitness, entertainment and self-defense exercise,,more and more people are practicing it as well as increasing their interest. In recent years, it has spread abroad, and in a lot of countries taijiquan practice is becoming more and more popular.Japan is one representative country on taijiquan’s development history. It not only has promoted a very standardized teaching organization, but also a nationwide Taijiquan Exchange Championship. Therefore, a good understanding of the development of Japanese Taijiquan Exchange Championships not only will give us an overall understanding of Japanese taijiquan practice, but will have an important reference value for China for its development of a nationwide taijiquan exchange championships platform.Through questionnaires, statistics, expert interviews and other methods, this thesis has analyzed the evolution through twenty-four Japanese Taijiquan Exchange Championships concerning competition number of entries, events, approaches, expenses as well as the contestants’ motivation factors. It was reported a significant growth in the number of participants, from the first championships having just a little more than 500 people to more than 4,000 people in the latest; from the point of view of the competition events, it was reported that for individual events the number of entries didn’t increase significantly, but the number of entries for group events increased remarkably; the application fee for group events is charged according to the number of participants, that is why, except for the first two championships, in which occured a lot of changes, the collected application fee in the last four championships has remained stable, indicating that the number of applications increased;the events were based primarily on competitive taijiquan forms;the participating procedure is very strict and people are encouraged to join the association to fulfill one’s obligation with the championships. Through the analysis of the changing rules and the operating pattern of the successful development of Japanese Taijiquan Exchange Championships, an important reference was obtained for the development of this country’s taijiquan championships.
