Abstract

Water pollution and water shortage have become global issues. Water pollution is mainly caused by the excess emissions of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage. In rural areas, excessive use of fertilizers and the unreasonable disposal of poultry livestock waste also make the water polluted. The influence of human activities to water bodies on the Yangtze River Delta region has been studied quantitatively in this paper. From October 2009 to January 2010, we conducted questionnaire survey in Shanghai, Suzhou, Yixing, Jiaxing and Huzhou, which located in the Yangtze River Delta. The questionnaires include questions about daily life and awareness of the water environment. After comparing the data between urban and rural areas, the comparison among the five cities data, we get conclusion as follows:1. In the five cities, the daily amount of food intake per capita is 2,563.6g, which protein intake is 238.89 g. Compared to ten years ago, the diet changes a lot:meat intake is 1.5 times as ten years ago, fisheries intake is 1.7 times as ten years ago, eggs 1.6 times, milk 1.8 times, which means people’s daily intake of protein increase and the nitrogen released into the environment also increase.2. Comparing the water and electricity consumption with ten years ago between urban and rural, there is no significant difference (p>0.05) between the urban and rural water consumption now, but significant differences (p<0.05) in electricity consumption. When we conduct paired sample t tests between now and ten years ago in the urban and rural data, we found there is significant differences (p<0.05) in electricity and water consumption.3. In the water-saving awareness, there is no significant difference (p>0.05) between urban and rural residents. Combined with the educational level of urban and rural residents with significant difference (p<0.05), we found whether the residents have water-saving awareness does not have obvious correlation with education level. 4. Spreading of fertilizer in rural areas (43% of the surface facilities spread,18% of facilities with irrigated,22% of the depth of cover applied,17% Mechanized) and fertilizer selection (15% chose the recommended agricultural science team) are unscientific, it lead to excessive fertilizer use and low utilization. the volatilizing of majority fertilizer and some running off into the water increase water pollution.5. Models have been made in this paper for the substances flow of urban and rural families in one year, a household as unit. The main substances out from an urban family includes garbage 1241kg, human waste 2175kg, synthetic detergent 13L and fuel 564L. A rural family’s substance out includes garbage 2080kg, human excreta 2575kg, synthetic detergent 10L, fuel 132L, fertilizers 328kg, poultry and livestock waste 418kg, among which the last two items are the important factors causing Agricultural Non-point Source Pollution(ANPSP) in rural areas.
