Abstract


Xikun Chouchangji has caused some controversy since it was created and also attracted people’s attention by its unique charm.As the most important achievement of Xikun style, Xikun Chouchangji is closely related to the social background and the law of development in literature, so its creation is the absolute result of that time. With the economic development of early Song dynasty, a general social mood of luxurious pleasure also developed. Poems to praise the high achievements and morality were made very popular under the peaceful and prosperous environment. All those established the basis of time for Xikun Chouchangji. At the same time, the implementation of scholar-officials politics and imperial examination system made scholars improve their literary level. In addition, with the development of poetry from late Tang dynasty to early Song, Yang Yi, etc. imitated the writing style of Li Shangyin, whose poems embodied the artistic characteristics of emotion, richness and details, in contrast with the dullness of Bai style and Late Tang style poetry. That provides the book enough literary supports. Xikun Chouchangji is like an exotic flower in poetry, whose unique artistic characteristics make it shining as is said "no one likes a flat mountain as well as a flat article". The use of classical allusions is the most notable feature of this book. The large amounts of various allusions have profound meanings and a deep sense of academy. Xikun writers’broad knowledge of "poem arts beyond poems" is more shown on the delicate organization, skillful rhythms, precise antitheses and normative forms. The careful use of characters as well as the pursuit of gorgeous words and magnificent sentences is also easy to see in the book. The method of intertext is also used in the creation. The academic sense reflected in the use of classical allusions in Xikun Chouchangji is the beginning of Song poems from knowledge. From then on, Xikun style appears as a poetic approach, so the characteristics of Xikun style discussed in the thesis are also those of Xikun Chouchangji. Xikun style is aesthetic and establishes the elegant form of poetry. Through the whole development of literature, Xikun Chouchangji and Xikun style play significant roles in literary history of Song Dynasty. They have hints in most of the Song poems, and many writers at that time were influenced by Xikun Chouchangji.This thesis analyzes the creation, background, artistic characteristics as well as value and influence, etc. of the book, and the focus is its unique artistic characteristics. Based on the correction of the prejudice and misunderstanding in some past assessments, this thesis also tries to assess and evaluate the work objectively and completely, in order to restore its position in literary history.
