Abstract


In 1976, Halliday and Hasan publish Cohesion in English. This book is widely recognized as the landmark of the establishment of cohesion theory. Cohesion theory then becomes the subject of many linguists in the field of linguistics. Cohesion study as one important part of text analysis makes great contribution to the development of it. The theory framework of this research is mainly based on the cohesion studies by Halliday and Hasan.The Wall Street Journal is an English international daily newspaper which pays particular emphasis on economic reports. It has great circulation and has won the Pulitzer Prize, the top award in the field of journalism, thirty-three times.335 pieces of economic news are downloaded from the official website of The Wall Street Journal from September to December in 2010 and 30 pieces are selected to be the research subject.The research is carried out from five main cohesive devices:reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical cohesion. Both qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis are applied. This study analyzes how cohesive devices are used in the economic news through examples. Assisted by softwares AntConc and FoxPro, it is found that lexical cohesion is the main device to realize cohesion in the economic news. Reference is the second on usage and conjunction the third. Ellipsis and substitution are seldom used. Each cohesive device also has its own feature. This research enriches the cohesion studies on the genre of the economic news text. It is hoped that the research can help audience get economic information more effectively and be useful for teaching, English economic news writing and related studies.
