Abstract

Objections of energy and industry construction in the twentieth century are“transmitting electric power from west to east”,“supplying each other between north and south”and“connecting power network nationwide”. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission, carrying the characteristics of adapting to transmitting power of large capacity from long distance and connecting AC system, plays an important role in electric power construction in China. Yunnan-Guangdong±800kV and Xiangjiaba-Shanghai±800kV UHVDC projects, of the highest DC voltage in the world, were announced to be put in operation in June and July 2010 respectively, which opens a new page for HVDC development in China. One of the advantages of HVDC system is that it can be controlled easily and rapidly. As a significant part of the HVDC system, control system is the key to the normal operation of HVDC system. Analyzing structure and function of control system and studying the control strategy’s effects on the transient stability of AC system are indispensable to probe HVDC control modes’effect on recovering voltage and power after disturbance and operation stability of modern AC/DC network. The paper summarizes the development and characteristics of HVDC technology in Chapter 1. In the following chapters, the structure and connection mode of HVDC are introduced, components and working principle of the control system are described, the closed-loop simulation platform of±800kV UHVDC system based on RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator) is built, the control system of UHVDC system is tested, performance of the control system in AC/DC parallel operation is analyzed, problem of over-voltage in islanded mode is studied, control measures enhancing the stability level of AC/DC power system in islanded operation are proposed, and conclusion and prospects are made in the end.
