Abstract

Before the 19th century, Masonry which used as the main building materials play an important role in western Architecture, but with the industrial and technological progress and architecture material development, the production of brick and other masonry are gradually reduced. And now, regional civilization and traditional culture are fading quickly with the urbanization and globalization develop rapidly, In this course, some architects succeed in using masonry blocks in modern architecture after their reflection and exploration, Makes the brick masonry to obtain a new life or get a historical memorial in modern architectureThe paper aims to explore the process how these architects are studying about the properties of materials, combining the historical and modern, and finally exploring their new construction methods and material so provide a new possibility for use of masonry in future . Papers in chronological order of the thoughts and works of modern architects were analyzed, divided into three groups, due to different levels of access to information, architects analyzed before the construction of two ideas, works in the evolution of masonry construction, the last group would focus on the detail of the architectural construction, and the thoughts of the architect’s artistic and architectural philosophy.GroupⅠ: Frank. Lloyd. Wright’s and his architecturesGroupⅡ: Louis. I. Kahn and his architecturesGroupⅢ: Contemporary Architects and their worksThrough the analysis of the construction and the using logic of brick masonry of the three groups of cases. We would summarize some construction method in the buildings today and practical problems we have encountered, At the end we will try to provide the direction for further research.
