Abstract


British urban morphology school (Conzen school) and Italian type school (Caniggia school) are two important genres of urban morphology in western countries, both have accumulated a wealth of experience in large scale urban morphology research, and provided guidance and service in the practice of historical preservation. This paper is a micro-level of urban morphology empirical research, with an aim to explore the application of foreign theories of urban morphology in China.Beijing road area, rich in historical and cultural landscapes, has long been the Guangzhou central district with more than two thousand years of history; therefore, it has important significance as a sample in urban morphology research. Drawing on the theory of Conzen school and Caniggia school, this paper, based on the large scale topographic map analysis method combined with field research and historical data, will study the urban form of Beijing Road area in Guangzhou. While adopting the approach of urban morphology analysis, the innovation of this thesis lies in the current perspective which it views from. The thesis will focus on the current situation of the composition of urban morphological characteristics, on the grounds of historical materials, tracing the remainders and interrelations to analyze the evolution of urban morphology.In the preface, this study will review the development of urban morphology at home and abroad, and explain the related concepts. Taking into account the lack of historical map data, the paper established“present based, history deduced”mindset.In the main part, first, this paper summarizes the spatial pattern and historical development of Beijing road area as the whole, and then, according to the formation of different ages, it divides the present area into four“form regions”: the one prior to the Republic of China, after the Republic and before the liberation, after the liberation and before the reform and open policy, and after the reform and opening-up. In the next four chapters, each region will be studied in great details. This section includes three components: first is the number, the composition and the distribution characteristics of existing form region; the second is the analysis of the physical form of the three elements - plan units, building types and land uses one by one, on this basis to be consolidated, and then divided into“sub-morphological regions”; and the third summarizes the morphological characteristics and causes of the morphological regions. This section not only contains the analysis of morphological regions in spatial order, but also includes the summary of type process in chronological terms. Finally, on the basis of the research of each part of the morphology, went back to the whole. The last part will analyze the various forms of the elements of the region-street system, blocks, plots and building types classification analysis, which reveals the overall morphological characteristics and evolution of Beijing Road area.
