Brain science is the research front of life science, mixing together many disciplines and technology. The rapid development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) becomes a important tool for the study of brain science, it promotes the understanding, protecting, developing of brain. Based on the various image analysis technology, we can detect and research brain in many different aspects. Among them, brain mophometry can reflect the information of brain structures directly, and has a wide application in clinical use. This paper use the method of brain morphometry to study the high resolution structure MRI in clinical and cognitive field. Particularly, we discussed the possible pattern of variability of brain cortex. The main work is as follows:1. Study of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) revealed the "cortex-limbic system" pathophysiology model in social anxiety disorder (SAD) and numerical results show that amygdala play a important role in this model. But there is few study of the model using structure MRI. This paper first investigated possible pattern of variability of brain cortex using local Gyrification Index (lGI). Compared with the normal control, patients with SAD show significantly decreased lGI in superior parietal gyrus, and the mean lGI of the area correlated inversely with the severity of anxiety symptom. In addition, the result prove reduced left amygdala volume correlated inversely with the primal severity of anxiety symptom in SAD. These results may provide a new evidence for the "cortex-limbic system" model.2. The game of Chinese chess involves many aspects of high-level cognition. Previous study indicates that high-level cognition processes is associated with the brain’s functional architecture revealed by fMRI. Whether such long-term practice has the effect of cortical structure has not been investigated. We used high-resolution MRI to assess cortical thickness in 17 Chiness chess master players and 17 matched controls. Between-group differences show a whole cortical thickness decreased in masters group including the precuneus, prefrontal cotex and paracentral cortex. Higher intensity of training is associated with thinner cortex in bilateral precuneus, left hemisphere prefrontal cortex. These results provide a structural evidence for cortical plasticity associated with long-term practice in high-level cognition.
