Abstract


As a world wide religion, Manichaeism spread from west to east and left many materials which written in different languages such as Coptic, Greek, Latin, Middle Iranian (Middle Persian, Parthian, Sogdian and Bactrian), Old Turkish and Chinese etc. Before 20CE, scholars who researched on Manichaeism just relied on the materials from mani’s enemy or the Arab historians of 10CE, they did not know that Manichaeism had speared to the east of word such as Chinese Turkestan. In the early 20CE, the explorer found many manuscripts and texts in Turfan, these new materials made a new century for Manichaean researching. As the scholars read more the texts constantly and more things we know about Manichaean in Central Asia and China.The main materials of this paper are as follow, Arab historical: al-Nadim’s Fihrist, Al-Briruni’s The chronology of Ancient Nations;the Chinese materials:Xin Tang Shu,Jiu Tang Shu, Ce Fu Yuan Gui, Song Shi,etc; the uighur materials:the Karabalgasun inscription, the Manichaean hymns, the letter of Manichaean monks,etc.There is a collection of the literatures which had already published by other scholars. Meanwhile I also used the Chinese Manichaean texts such as Chinese Compendium, The Lower Section of Manichaean Hymns.The main points of this paper are as follow:First the reason why the Uighurs adopted Manichaeism. I analyzed it as a Historical coincidence, like a thing that every necessary condition was enough and in an external stimulus, it happened. Second this paper collected many literatures, according to this we can see that Manichaean had varied in the transmission process, for another part, we can summary the character of the uighur Manichaean languages.Manichaeism is a dualistic religion which is good materials for the research of comparative religion. The Manichaean texts were written in different language and it had parallel visions, researching on these parallel versions is not only helpful for studying Manichaeism, but also uncovers important sources for these ancient languages. In fact Manichaean also influenced uighur civilization and the structure of uighur language, these precious materials played important role in the study of the bygone civilization.So researching on Manichaean literatures are very important.
