Abstract


Repentance (or Chinese words "Chan-Hui") as a concept comes form Indian Buddhism.and it was one of Buddhists" practice methods in the beginning.Ever since it came in China.it has changed into a religious ritual that is specifically used for taking away sins or praying for blessings.This kind of religious ritual is also called "Bai-Chan" or "Li-Chan" in Chinese that means repentance for saluting Buddha.and it is a Buddhist activity to salute Buddha.recite Buddhist scriptures and confess negative karma following certain methods of repentance.According to textual research.this kind of religious ritual origins from the Jin Dynasty.and guadually thrived during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.and was popular in the Sui and Tang Dynasty.Method of repentance is too valuable to be neglected,although it unqualifies to take its place in the higher circles as a kind of a text.By studying it.we can see clearly the process of Chinese Buddhism’s going folkloric and secularized,it will make our research on Buddhism deep and multi-azimuth.If we specially make close study of the history of method of repentance.we could figure out the trails of changes and developments in Chinese Buddhist culture and understand the mass" pragmatic attitude to the religion.The focus of this thesis is on the period of the Southern Dynasties.especially on Emperor Liangwudi’s big impact on method of repentance.I am trying to find out the clues of changes of method of repentance and the relationship between method of repentance and the Sinicization of Buddhism by studying the text of Emperor Liangwudi’s Repentance (also known as Method of Repentance in Maitri-Karuna Monastery).
