Abstract


Culture, the way of life, is values and moral standards which an ethnic group lives by. Filial piety is the root of Chinese traditional ethics. However, due to mainstream society’s obsession with modernization, industrialization, and urbanization, the whole society loses in "modern" values, and spoiled humanistic care and traditional culture. Moreover, it is still infatuated with "economic man" and materialism.Based on fieldwork, this thesis attempts to show community spirit. It explores how common consciousness regularizes individual’s behaviors and how people pass on the spirit of filial piety in daily and ritual life. We have to rethink the result of individual’s exit from community life and ethical dilemma created by materialized disenchantment within intergenerational exchange.To take care of old parents is not only family affair, but also the reflection of society’s mentality. Modernization should include economic and moral modernization. While recently people pay more attention to economic modernization, moral decline is serious. Although the standard of material life has been improved, personal morals and social morals are both alarming. Chinese nation attached importance to filial piety in history, while it is very different in practice now during the process of modernization, which provokes our deep thinking.Cultural, economic and political structures are closely interconnected, and faced with dilemma of modernization. To summarize and identify the core value of traditional culture is a way to protect and inherit it. Thus, this thesis tries to further analyze reciprocity which is the spirit of filial piety and suggests that individual can return to community life, and to rebuild community with spirit. We need to rethink the development model which only gives priority to economic growth, and realize the post-modernization transformation focusing on holistic thinking.
