Abstract


There are some discussions about Greek state government in Xenophon’s works. They scattered in his work. This paper tries to analyse his work in order to find out his ideal government. The ancient Greek world fell into series of troubles after the Peloponnesian War. Athens and Sparta were declining; the other cities were not strong enough to bear leadership. Being an intellectual in the Greek world, Xenophon thinks that the factions under the oligarchy and democracy could not be eradicated, and tyranny could not be the ideal either because the city could have had a bad tyrant, which would be terrible to the polis. Only the educated and lawful monarchy can lead the ancient Greeks to recover. His ideal came first of all from his mentor Socrates. Secondly, his personal experience made him a monarchist. His ideal exerted some influences on the Greeks and the later generations though his ideas are not so complex as that of Plato and Aristotle.
