Abstract


There is a subtle diversification in cognizing the traditional Chinese painting with our pacing into the contemporary cultural context after the painting’s development and evolution in several thousand years. It becomes a key issue for us now to maintain and promote the Chinese painting’s vitality, and to dig up its appeal in the present cultural context and ecology. To discover and to transform on the basis of a fully understanding of the traditional essence is the proper means. In the meanwhile, the inheritance, discovery and developing of the painting materials and art medium turn to be a crucial link. The material medium, a comparatively independent factor in traditional Chinese painting, comes into being a system gradually with its main means as writing brushes, ink sticks, paper and ink stones, whose innovation plays a great part in the Chinese painting’s growing. Since the painting of flowers and birds has always been an important part of the traditional paintings, it is quite obvious of the influence of the material medium’s change on it. Therefore, the study of the material medium for the painting of flowers and birds turns to be relative important.The means of the Chinese painting of flowers and birds has been innovated in the pace of the development of the society, as well as the exaltation of human material and spiritual civilization. Its improvement would definitely have a great influence on the style and technique in paining the flowers and birds. In the meanwhile, people have an eternal pursuit of the painting materials. We are supposed to inherit and improve the advantages of the traditional painting material, as well as discover their practical techniques, so as to maintain and enrich the Chinese painting of flowers and birds characteristics and its typical eastern aesthetic charm.
