The Reflection of Romanticism Programme Music in the 19th Century

Abstract


The article embodies the characteristics of the literary features of the programme music by presenting the framework of the programme music, introducing the origin of the programme music and analyzing several genres of the programme music. The first chapter introduces the definition and overview of the programme music. It also describes three sections in the history of the programme music, which are from the Renaissance to the Baroque of the early development, the Classicalism of the mid-term development, the Romanticism of the peak. Then it further elaborates the main genres of the programme music in the Romantic period. The author classifies the programme music of the Romantic period into five categories:The first is concert overture; the second is programme suite; the third is program instrumental cycle and characteristics instrumental music; the fourth is program symphony; the fifth is program symphonic poem. Moreover, the author discusses the inevitability of the integration of the programme music and literature in the 19th century in the following three aspects: the development of Romantic literature and art, the influence of literature on the programme music and the literary thinking of the programme musicians. The main chapters analyze the six literary features of the programme music. The author classifys them by useing terms and literary thinking:melody depicted human feature; descriptive narration; sound effects contrast highlighting the conflict; orchestration presenting scenes atmosphere; bringing inspiration through music. In the final chapter, the author addresses the significance of Literariness in the programme music from three aspects, which are raising the awareness of music listeners, enriching the musical form and intensifying the sister art.For the writing of this dissertation, the author consider it as a further analyzing of a extremely representative music form-programme music in the Romantic period. It is also the individuality argumentation for the feature of combining the sister artwith Romantic period music in the 19th century Europe.
