Abstract

In the English four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, listening is particularly important in the English language communication. Studies have shown that people in real-life communication spend 40% to 50% of the time in listening, so we can say listening is very important. Listening comprehension is the important component of language practical ability, the core of the communication activities and the foundation of developing other language skills. Good English listening comprehension is the premise and foundation of learning English well. Currently, listening comprehension, as a language testing, is widely used in all kinds of exams. The learning and training of listening has become one of the highlights of English teaching. Different from other general education, vocational English teaching is cultivating senior practical talents of producting, managing and serving, so English teaching should focus on the cultivation of the students’ listening and speaking communicative abilities and practical application abilities, while in order to improve students’these abilities, we should improve listening skills first. However, English listening abilities in vocational students are generally weak and are mainly shown in the following two aspects:firstly, most learners aren’t interested in the English listening course and can’t plan, monitor and evaluate their learning well. Secondly, in the traditional teacher-centered listening instruction, teachers play roles as the "cassette player", "answer verifiers" and "examiner", and lack of the comprehensive consideration during the listening teaching. Teachers have ignored students’ active participation in the process of listening comprehension. In order to improve the English listening teaching ability, the author took the metacognitive strategies training in English listening teaching according to the college English listening teaching scheme and the material requirements and aimed to solve the problem of vocational students’poor English listening comprehension. In this experiment, eighty freshman students majoring in chemical engineering from Wuhai Vocational and Technical College participated in the experimental study. The author made the English listening teaching study by the questionnaire survey and the methods of pre-test and post-test.To integrate the meta-cognitive strategies training into English listening teaching is that teachers cultivate students’meta-cognitive awareness and guide students to use the meta-cognitive strategies in English listening classroom to improve students listening performance. In this research with two groups (one experimental group and one control group), the author tried to explore the following two questions:(1) Does meta-cognitive listening strategy instruction play a positive role in Vocational Chemical Engineering students listening proficiency? (2) Does meta-cognitive listening strategy
