Effects of ESL/EFL Learning Contexts on English Vocabulary Development

Abstract


L2 vocabulary acquisition is a dynamic and complex process, highly sensitive and adaptive to the learning context. And ESL learning context has long been considered to beneficial to L2 linguistic competence.This study examines the effects of ESL/EFL learning contexts on English vocabulary development. As it is a case study, the participants are limited to 2 people, one in ESL learning context, the other EFL. The data are collected through seven months and then submitted to SPSS software so as to detect whether significantly different effects of ESL/EFL learning contexts exist on the receptive and productive vocabulary size at 3000 word level, academic words and 5000 word level, lexical variation and lexical sophistication as well.From detailed discussion, it can be concluded that both ESL and EFL learning context lead to greatest gains in academic vocabulary size, but the ESL learning context is obviously advantageous to the overall improvement of vocabulary size, especially the receptive and productive size at 3000 word band and productive size at 5000 word band. However, no significantly different effects of either ESL or EFL learning context can be found on vocabulary variation or vocabulary sophistication in free writing assignments during the experiment period.Finally, besides major findings that are listed, some suggestions for vocabulary teaching and learning, limitations of the present research as well as recommendations for further investigation on the related issues are also pointed out.
