Abstract

The thesis studies the acoustic features and errors of overseas Pakistani students with intermediate Chinese level in the first level vowels of Chinese. It analyses the causes of errors combined with modern linguistic theories, and makes some suggestions on teaching based on the error features.This thesis adopts the sample survey method and chooses the acoustic samples of 10 overseas Pakistani students as objects. By using the Praat phonetic analysis software, it describes the first level vowels of F1 and F2 of overseas Pakistani students, and conducts contrastive analysis based on relevant data of Beijing language which serves as standards, and tries to work out the error features and causes.This thesis includes five parts. The first part serves as the introduction, which introduces the rationale, writing purpose, some relevant literature, and object of study, research methods and the experimental procedures. The second part studies the features of the first level vowels of Pakistani students when speaking Chinese. It first collects and analyzes the recording samples of 10 Pakistani students and draws the phonological figures and patterns of the first vowels of Pakistani students, and investigates the phonetic features of Pakistani students. The third part makes contrastive analysis of Pakistani students’native language and the first level vowels of Beijing language. It first introduces the first vowel system of Urdu and then makes a specific comparison between Urdu and Beijing language, and therefore, studies the error causes of the first vowels of Pakistani students. The fourth part deals with the teaching suggestions based the above parts. The final part is the summary, which includes the conclusion, main creative points and drawbacks.The conclusion of the thesis are as follows:The vowels [y、(?)] of Urdu are the three empty Chinese first level vowels, which are common errors made by Pakistani students. Of the error vowels, [(?)] is the hardest for the students to master. And the next are [y、(?)]. The high rate of pronunciation error of [y] made by them mainly owes to unsuccessful mastering of round labium. The main problem of pronouncing [(?)] consists in not finding the right position of the tongue and changing the place of articulation a lot. The problem with pronouncing [a] is that it is at the back position of their phonetic system, pronounced as a back low vowel, which is actually closes to the vowel of [a]. The vowel of [u], in lower position, is pronounced as a back round semi-high vowel. The vowel [γ] in Beijing language is a back vowel. Their error may due to their wrong position of the tongue, which is because they often put the tongue to the middle-front position and made it actually become a middle vowel.
