Abstract


Abbreviation is a kind of very noticeable phenomenon both in old Chinese and modern Chinese. With the development of the society, more and more abbreviations have been appearing. Many scholars have made studies of the linguistic phenominon.In the hope of deepening the cognition of and eliciting more systematic insights into abbreviations, this paper makes a systematic introduction of abbreviation and its previous research, with a lot of examples from the literature of both the old Chinese and the modern Chinese; it explores the formation features as well as the major formation motivations of Chinese abbreviations with reference to meaning, prosody, cognition, etc., then puts forward some standardization principles of the formation of Chinese abbreviations, and finally offers some prospects in the study of abbreviation in terms of pregmatics, transformational-generative grammar and sociallinguistics.
