Abstract


The present thesis makes a cross-linguistic syntactic analysis of articles within theframeworks of DP hypothesis and phase theory. With the development of the syntactic theory,Abney (1987) has proposed the DP Analysis for the nominal phrases, which provides a widebasis for the syntactic study of the DPs and gains support from many scholars. Chomsky’s(1999) latest achievement—phase theory affords a more flexible method to study nominalphrases. Definiteness advocated by Lyons (1999) casts new light on the tendency of definitephrase study.I identify that articles are the only D, and other prenominal elements such as pronouns,classifiers and so on take up different positions. Under the theoretical framework ofgenerative grammar, articles are definitely a functional category. However, the syntactic statusof articles is disputable between the two approaches: articles are heads of DPs and articles arein specifiers of DPs. Different the traditional assumption, I assume that both indefinite articleand definite article, to some extent, have something to do with definiteness feature. Then,with the help of comparison method, I try to turn to phase theory to give a unitary account ofsyntactic status of articles to support my assumption that (in) definite articles universally takethe position of specifier, having to do with definiteness in definite phrase.Cross-language data, no matter whether the language has an over article or covert article,are analyzed in this paper in order to support the conclusion. Inspired by the spirit ofuniversality, it begins with the analysis of English articles, and then develops into article-lesslanguages. To work out the specifier status of article category, special attention is paid to themost representative article-less languages.
