Abstract


In the 16th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, the Party set the goal of social development for China to be the "All-round Building-up of the Well-off Society". The key to achieve this goal is the development of the rural areas, specifically the. wellbeing of the farmers. The farming population is at the core of the construction of the "New Countryside" project. They are also the leading constructing force of this project. To truly motivate the farmers to take up their essential roles, creating a new kind of farmers, who are educated, technically trained and business active is the solution. The key task to this solution is to improve the level of education of farmers in science and technology. Accomplishing this task will not only speed up the construction process of the "New Countryside" project, but also has great implications in the construction of modern agriculture and well-off society. However, the average level of understandings of science and technology of the Chinese farmers is low. The infrastructure for the education efforts is also underdeveloped. Therefore, the need for plausible methods to improve this situation is urgent. In this essay, we discussed these issues in detail in five parts.Part.1 The general description of the characteristics of the Chinese farmers, regarding to the understandings in science and technology. First, we addressed the concept of understandings of science and technology as well as that of the Chinese farmers. Second, we described the status quo and existing problems in the understandings of science and technology of the Chinese farmers. This formed the theoretical basis for the later discussion of such improvements.Part.2 The analysis of the social implications for the structural improvement of the understandings of science and technology of the Chinese farmers. The purpose of this part is to prove that such improvements are absolutely essential.Part.3 The requirements from the "New Countryside" project to the understandings of science and technology of the farmers. In this part, we stated the requirements of improving the understandingss of the farmers in four aspects:the construction of modem civilization in material wellbeing, spiritual wellbeing, political wellbeing andenvironmental wellbeing. This also laid down the theoretical foundations for the further discussions of the limitations.Part.4 The limitations in the process of improving the understandings of science and technology of Chinese farmers. We discussed the internal and external aspects of the limitations, which laid down the theoretical references for the discussion of the improving methods.Part.5 The methods of improving the understandings of science and technology of Chinese farmers. This is the most important part of this essay, the solutions. The arguments directly aimed at the low level of understandings of science and technology among Chinese. farmers and the requirements and implications following the improvements. In the hope of making a difference in the improving efforts, we drew conclusions from four major methods:popular science educations, professional trainings, technical services and interactions.
