Abstract


Recently Web 2.0 and SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) are two of the most edge-cutting directions in the IT industry. From application area’ s perspective, Web 2.0 mainly focuses on the public computing throughout the Internet world, while SOA lies more in the enterprise computing within the corporate Intranet. Thanks to the continuous development progress from social, enterprise and technology areas, trend cannot be even clearer that those Web-based composite applications with integrated features from both SOA and Web 2.0 methodologies are on the rise in response to the huge underlying requirements. Compared with traditional Web-based applications, the new composite applications have been involving significant changes with respect to the whole development lifecycle from business model and conceptual design to the programming model, data presentation, operation and maintenance, etc.First of all, such emerging trend with enterprise social computing underpinned by Web-based composite applications is analyzed from the impacting areas of social, enterprise and technology, respectively. A vision of "Web-Oriented Composite Environment" is coming up to fit the gaps between traditional enterprise applications and emerging Web 2.0 method lies, aiming to provide a middle-layer environment with reusable built-in technology platform and enough flexibility and extensibility. Its architectural conceptual design is covered from the composing areas of resource tier, service tier, server side runtime, standard technology/protocol tier, client side runtime, their design times and enterprise social tier, respectively.Next of all, one reference architecture is introduced along with its detailed design and specific implementation around the key areas of server side runtime and standard technology/protocol tier, among which the highlights are the featured results of a URI-driven RESTful open API framework, a built-in Feed programming model for Web Content Syndication support and their flexibility and extensibility design.Last of all, a case study on enterprise social computing is gone through by applying the Web-Oriented Composite Environment as the basis, so as to prove its feasibility, as well as to put the work into practices to validate its effectiveness, flexibility and extensibility in building new enterprise Web-based composite applications.
