Abstract


In the history of developing countries or regional economy development after WWII ,less than a half century, Taiwan which used to be a completely unknown insular economy turned into a booming newly-industrializing society, and became one of the representatives of world-famous ’East Asian wonder.’ As for the economic development and economical resources, the government and entrepreneurs are concerned with the foreign exchange just as (they are concerned) with the very day weather report. Before 1970,Taiwan carried out fixed exchange rate system. Affected by the collapse of Breton Woods system and the fluctuation of world economy situation, the Taiwan Authorities got rid of fixed exchange rate system and reform foreign exchange rate system. After that, the NTD appreciation got further acceleration. From 1983 to 1989, every US$ in cash which was equivalent to 40.27 NTD appreciated to 26.16 NTD. The appreciation scope is up to 35%.In the first place, the paper makes a brief history retrospect of NTD appreciation. Through the analysis of NTD appreciation’s reasons and side effect, it outlines the process of NTD appreciation. Then, the thesis further analyses the countermeasures and implementing effect against NTD appreciation in Taiwan Authority. It also makes a comparison between NTD appreciation and RMB appreciation and finds the differences and similarities between them. On the basis of this, the paper draws conclusion on some of the countermeasures that the mainland can make reference to. At last, the paper draws lesson from NTD appreciation and puts forward advice against RMB appreciation.
