Abstract

Wireless mesh network(WMN) is one of the most promising next-generation wire-less network technologies, which has showed its advantages in deployment, access, andreliability and so on. Recently the special standards for WMN are not enough completeto apply in widespread applications. The WMN based IEEE 802.11 because of low costand high compatibility and so on has became most popular. Traditional association met-ric in IEEE 802.11 is only the Received Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI). Such policy isinefficient and inflexible in the context of wireless mesh network (WMN) and leads to theunbalance of traffic load and poor performance of network. Further more the traditionalhandoff between APs will lead to interrupt of the client communication link. It influencesthe real-time applications. Most existing solutions inevitably need to modify the 802.11standard or wireless interface drivers of both MAP and MC side, which are not feasibleor flexible in actual deployment.Aiming to solve these problems, we proposes a many-to- many association schemecalled Multiple ASSociation (MASS) for IEEE 802.11 WMN after analysing the tradi-tional association scheme and handoff scheme. The MASS allows a Mesh Client (MC)to be associated with multiple Mesh APs (MAPs) simultaneously through some specialconfigure on MAPs. The most appropriate MAP is selected adaptively from a group ofMAPs to actually serve the MC based on its correspondence node. Consequently, whenthe MC communicates with different nodes, probably distinct MAPs are employed to for-warditspackets. TheprotocoliscompatiblewithcurrentIEEE802.11standardsanddoesnot need any modification on the MC.The advantages contain:(1)MASS can adaptivelyselect the most appropriate MAP to serve the MC based on client communication target.Itcontributes to improve the client throughput and reduce the transmission delay;(2)MASScan achieve the seamless handoff in the dynamic environment. It contributes to guaranteethereal-timeapplicationQoS;(3)MASSiscompatiblewithcurrentIEEE802.11standardsand does not need any modification on the MC.It contributes to deploy and update easily. We states the protocol design and details the gordian technique. Then the NS-3 simu-lation confirms the feasibility and effectiveness of MASS.This paper also implements theMASS using Click develop tools and tests in the real testbed.Experimental results showthat MASS can achieve the improvement of client throughput and reduction of transmis- sion delay with low overhead, and achieve the seamless handoff among the client move-ment.It indicates that MASS is a novel simple and effective mesh association scheme.
