Abstract

The traditional Suzhou Gardens and Steven Holl’s phenomenologicalarchitecture respectively being the pith and representative of the Chinese classicalgardens art and the western contemporary architectural culture, the former reflects thephilosophy ideology and space-building idea of the ancient China with the profoundinside information of our culture and exquisite gardening; the latter interprets theessential point of the contemporary architectural culture and space-designing with theunique architecture phenomenology and creative practice. Chinese architecturalcommunity pays earnest attention to the art expressive force of both of them, and thenanalysis and research based on the above has gradually developed into deeper andbroader direction than that of the past.However, according to the exiting research fruits, much discussion about theSuzhou Gardens and Holl’s phenomenological architecture was respectively carriedon their own areas, so the difference between them made the comparison and researchof the cross-era and cross-cultural system of them still empty. Therefore, this thesisintends to make breakthrough in this part and change the past isolated researchmethods of Suzhou Gardens and Holl’s phenomenological architecture. This thesiswill reconsider them with the connected version and use comparison as well as seekthe essence from the facts.In terms of researches, we can find that although Suzhou Gardens and Holl’sphenomenological architecture is the offspring of different era and cultural context aswell as their works not belong to the same sort, between tradition and modern, eastand west, and gardens and architecture exist the potential, inevitable and importantconnection. The revelation of the relativity makes us realize the spirit of architectureand mouse out the inherent connection from the deeper lay, when we code with thequestion of the inheritance of the Chinese tradition architectural culture and thereference of western modern architectural culture in the future. It also has veryimportant enlightening significance and value for reference for us to use new thought,open up new angle of view, develop new technique, and then exploit the national andmodern road of Chinese architecture.This thesis is divided into three part as follows: in the first place, this thesiselaborate the origin , object, content , methods and significance of the research as wellas the structure of this thesis and so forth; and then elucidates the potential consistency between Suzhou Gardens and Holl’s phenomenological architecture in terms ofcreative ideas, space expression and design methods and so on systematically andcomprehensively; finally, reveals the potential correlative inevitability between themand its important enlightening significance to the inheritance and development ofChinese architecture.
