Abstract

Objective: Tendon is important in musculoskeletal system which is the second mechanism of muscle contraction. Many researchers concerned on the metabolism of muscle and bone, little is on the tendon and there is no complete study which is about the effect on the tendon and its changeable mechanism caused by motion. There is no study on human tendon caused by motion in our country. This study which compares cross-sectional area, modulus of elasticity and stiffness of Achilles tendon of sprinters with non-athletes, explores the effects of the Achilles tendon brought by sprint training. Methods: The sprinters are divided into men’s experimental group and women’s one. The test objectives who are of the corresponding age are divided into men’s control group and women’s one. Then Achilles tendon cross-sectional area of each object, the Achilles tendon changes in length and the arm of force power of ankle joint points when Plantar flexes are measured by ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus. Plantar flexion torque when plantar flexion of each object being isometric at the time, is still measured using isokinetic test system. Thus calculates the elastic modulus and stiffness of Achilles tendon. Results: The human Achilles tendon cross-sectional area and weight are positively correlated, while no significant correlation with height. Tendon cross-sectional area of men significantly increases compared to women’. There was no significant change about the cross sectional area of the Achilles tendon as comparing Sprint athletes with non-athletes. Elastic modulus and stiffness are increased significantly, which is apparently different. Conclusion: After the sprinting training Achilles tendon elastic modulus and stiffness are increased significantly and there are no significant differences in cross-sectional area. This shows that after training tendon can withstand greater stress due to the changes of internal structure rather than by thickening and fattening.
