Abstract


A.S. Byatt is a world renowned critic and writer. Her identity both as a critic and a writer offers her a unique double vision, which enables Byatt to write novels that display her considerable expertise in narrative technique and in-depth insight into contemporary academia. Her masterpiece Possession: A Romance (1990) is among them.The Booker Prize winning Possession: A Romance has been hailed as a successful academic novel. Many critics approach this novel from different perspectives such as the narrative strategies employed in the novel, the postmodernity of the novel, or feminism. Among the fruitful achievements that have been made, there is one made by Kelly which mentions Byatt’s double vision. Kelly doesn’t explore her study further, though.The questions of how to study a literary text and should the authorial intention be ignored have been under heated discussion in contemporary academia. As a critic, Byatt has been upset by defects existing within the postmodern academia; as a writer, she offers her Possession: A Romance as a redemption to the postmodern academia.The author of the present thesis means to try to study Byatt’s opinion about contemporary literary criticism through the analysis of her creation and depiction of different types of scholars in the novel and to explore how Byatt brings off the task of intermingling her vision both as a critic and a writer perfectly.
