Abstract


Owing to China’s entry into WTO, the communication between China and the world has become increasingly frequent. The need for English talent is greater and greater, so the employment market gives the graduates from vocational schools definite requirements about English communicative ability. However, the graduates from vocational schools are generally weak in English communicative ability and can’t meet the employers’demands. They attach great importance to studying specialized skills but overlook studying English, especially oral English. Teachers always pay more attention to language knowledge and give little chances or little help to their students to develop English communicative ability. It is popular that there are many students not to dare to speak, not to be able to speak or not to be willing to speak in oral English class.Facing the state of inefficient oral English teaching, the author introduced the scaffolding instructional pattern into the oral English teaching of vocational school. To prove whether this instructional pattern with vocational school’s characteristics can foster the students’interest and develop their English communicative ability, the author conducted the experiment in two classes majoring in preschool education of Changde Normal School. These two classes are from Gradel and use new teaching material published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. One is the experimental class, which adopted the scaffolding instructional pattern in oral English teaching. The other is the controlled class, which used the traditional pattern. The experiment lasted for one year. The author conducted questionnaire survey and interview before and after the experiment. The author also carried out three oral English tests. The qualitative analysis of the results of questionnaire surveys and interviews shows that the students’interests from the experimental class are much greater than the students’interests from the controlled class, and that most students from the experimental class are satisfied with the new pattern. The quantitative analysis of the results of three tests indicates that the scores of the experimental class are even higher than those of the controlled class in the medium test and the last test, and that pass percentage of the experimental class is hugely outstripped that of the controlled class. The research tells us that students can finish the task, which they were unable to finish by themselves before, with the help of the scaffolding offered by their teacher. Thus, the scaffolding instructional pattern with vocational school’s characteristics can arouse the students’oral English interests, foster their English communicative ability and get oral English teaching more efficient.
