Abstract

Economic globalization, as an inevitable trend, makes all the countries in the world economically closely interdependent. With the gradually deepening reform and opening and steady economic growth over more than 30 years, China plays an increasingly prominent role in the economic development of the world, and at the same time, China’s own development also depends more on economic support from foreign countries, large scale of foreign capital infusing new energy into the development of China’s economy. As one of the cities that the state council has determined to open up, Dalian has been putting the attraction of investment as an important strategy for urban economic development, and the government continuously adjusts policies and methods according to varying economic situations. Meanwhile, the government also actively explores new ways and new forms of using foreign capital on the basis of new features that the international investment has. Therefore, Dalian has made remarkable achievement in terms of capital attraction, and in 2010 the amount of foreign investment it actually used was up to＄10.03 billion, making it top of other deputy provincial cities and one of the cities that use the most foreign investment.This paper takes Dalian, the opening gateway of the North, as the research object, keeps focus on the impact that foreign direct investment (FDI) has on the various aspects of economic development, and tries to fully explore the contribution FDI has made to the development of urban economy, to avoid the research results turn out to be universal thanks to the expansion of the study area, and at the same time, to overcome the one-sidedness.In the first place, based on a large number of statistical data, this paper has made a detailed description about the present situation of the utilization of foreign direct investment, including its scale, mode, source and the industry distribution. Through the statistical analysis, it can be concluded:Since 2005, the size of the actual use of foreign capital rapidly rises in Dalian; The foreign capital is used by the way of wholly foreign owned way; FDI of Dalian mainly comes from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, the U.S. and British Virgin, and the main part of the source is Asia; The largest proportion of FDI goes into the second industry, but gradually shifts to the third industry.In the second place, this thesis adopts the empirical analysis method to explore the effects FDI have on economic development of Dalian from the following five aspects:Firstly, from the analysis of the relationship between FDI and capital formation, we can see that the growth of FDI drives an increase in whole-society fixed asset investment, therefore promoting the capital formation; Secondly, the analysis of FDI and the foreign trade reveals that FDI has played a strong role in pushing both import and export; Thirdly, it analyses FDI’s effect on the employment, which doesn’t get through the Granger Causality Test, indicating that the increase of FDI is not the direct reason for the change of employment, and their relationship must be realized by indirect contact. Fourthly, through analysis of FDI and the progress of technology, it can be concluded that although the indirect impact of FDI on the progress of technology is negative, it is offset by the direct positive impact. Consequently, in general, the access of foreign capital and technology progress in Dalian positively related; Fifthly, by analyzing foreign direct investment and economic growth, we find that FDI plays a more important role in driving economic growth than domestic investment, and the effect is not sound before it enters middle term.
