Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the antibacterial activity of extracts from Zostera marina against the bacterial that had been separated from a kind of Apostichopus japonicus skin ulceration disease previously. A 95% ethanol (v/v) solvent was used to extract Zostera marina at 50°C. Aqueous extract (ZA) showed obvious bacteriostatic effect against the tested bacterial stains (inhibition halo diameters between 8.23 mm and 13.62 mm), whereas the ethyl acetate extract (ZE) was almost inactive. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of ZA against four pathogens were homogeneous at 12.8 mg/ml. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) assay was used to analyze ZA, six fractions were got. In the further study, six fractions showed the activities to inhibit tested bacteria. The six fractions were averse in the exhibition of the activity of ZA.ZA was then used to inhibit the lavae of and Balanus albicostatus Pilsbry. Feng Danqing had studied the optimal ranges of conditions on settlement of Balanus albicostatus Pilsbry cyprid, temperature 25-35°C, salinity 15-35, larval density 1-20 larva/ml, substratum polystyrene or glass. Four concentrations of ZA were used to inhibit in the ahesion of Balanus albicostatus Pilsbry, 10、50、100、500 and 1000mg/L. The ahesion percentage of Balanus albicostatus Pilsbry at 10mg/L is 56.78%, at 50mg/L is 47.23%, at 100mg/L is 20.18%, at 500mg/L is 4.23%, at 1000mg/L is 0%.The extract from Zostera marina exhibits comprehensive activity, against the bacterial strains seperated from a kind of Apostichopus japonicus skin ulceration disease and the settelement of the lavae of Chthamalus challengeri Hoek. More reseach must be done to find which substances responsible for the activity of the extract.
