Abstract


Song lyrics, as vehicles transmitting information between song lyrics composer and audiences, have long been the object of study in terms of aesthetics, culture, history, rhetoric, etc. Studies, whether in aesthetics or rhetoric, are treating the semantic analysis of song lyrics as an incessant process of encoding and decoding activities, taking place on the superficial structure of song lyrics. They pay little attention to the study of the meaning construction of song lyrics. The present study intends to conduct a cognitive approach to song lyrics, which we hope will contribute to later explorations in related fields.Accordingly, this thesis analyzes meaning construction of Fang Wenshan’s song lyrics, from the perspective of CIT, with an aim to test the adequacy and descriptive power of CIT, and to obtain some new insights to extend the research scope that is essential to prove the generality of CIT.Fang Wenshan, taking ancient principles of writing poems as a unique model in his writing of song lyrics, sets his specific style in the current pop music circle of China. His way of composing lyrics is so singular that few contemporary song lyrics composers could surpass him. His song lyrics, well-known for a host of allusions to classical Chinese poetry and traditional cultural elements, like photo montage, are all shining with unique Chinese flavor. It is proper to notify that rather than listening to a piece of music, we can taste in Fang Wenshan’s song lyrics the long-lasting charm of traditional Chinese culture.To expose this charming flavor by surfacing Fang Wenshan’s song lyrics may enliven linguistic analysis. The words in Fang Wenshan’s works build up a visional mock reality of returning to ancient China. The emergence of the visional mock reality is closely related with mental activities of the audience, when they are appreciating his song lyrics. This is in matching with the operation of CIT to some extent. And this is also the most apparent impulse for us to make a cognitive study of song lyrics. By applying Conceptual Integration Theories (shortened as CIT) to the interpretation of song lyrics by Fang Wenshan, we come to the following observations:It is proved that CIT can be used to interpret meaning construction and reasoning mechanism of song lyrics in a precise way.1) Under the guidance of CIT framework, meaning construction is regarded as a cognitive process and comprehension of song lyrics a cognitive activity. During the course of appreciating song lyrics, a mental space is set up in part by recruiting structures from conceptual domains and from song lyrics texts. We can build different and incompatible spaces.2) Within the limited space of song lyrics, song writers make use of a series of images to bring out visionary mock realities and particular sentiments. These images are conductive for the audience to build up and appreciate the visionary mock realities. These realities, in the illusory world, are helpful for the audience to feel the particular sentiments imbued in the ingenious lexical collocations.3) During the course of interpreting what the subject of the song lyrics is, we could not neglect that projection and blending are two kernel elements, which are the original impetus for us to maintain normal brain activity. On the basis of projecting and blending related elements, song writers construct the conceptual space according to their own experiences, while the audience will construct and appreciate the conceptual space in accordance with their own experiences. What song writers want to deliver to the audience lies in the internal organizations of song texts. To receive a complete understanding of song writers’ intention, the audience should perceive and comprehend the literal organization using their sensibility, however.Essentially speaking, the comprehension process of appreciating and interpreting song lyrics is dynamic due to its unique language and complicated images.4) Limitations of the present study:Firstly, we only have chosen four from the 50 pieces of Fang Wenshan’s song lyrics as the study object to each of the four Conceptual Integration Networks (shortened as CIN). The study is carried out on the basis of analyzing typical examples, which fails to conduct a quantitative analysis.Secondly, we have observed that not all the sentence structures of a piece of song lyrics fit for only one category of CIN. We only set up the most typical cognitive figure for the case studies.Thirdly, those issues belonging to the interest of rhyme of verse are beyond the explanatory power of CIT.
