Abstract


The President of the United States in his inaugural speech an Inauguration Day published at home and abroad by the newly elected president to political speech. With this speech, the president announced his own policy agenda, to persuade the public to accept and support their point of view. The inauguration speech of great significance, is a unique and important practical style. Over time, however, the English change continuously to adapt to the requirements of the different periods. Different historical periods in his inaugural speech of the President of the United States is bound to reflect the different characteristics of each period. This article from the vocabulary changes as the starting point of the vocabulary changes inaugural speech of the President of the United States conducted in-depth research. The total selected from Washington, the first U.S. president in 1789 to 2009, President Barack Obama, including seven presidential inaugural address lasted study the vocabulary of change in the United States presidential inauguration speech. Of the vocabulary changes lasted in the inaugural speech of the President of the United States not only to help the reader to a deeper understanding of this style, to better appreciate the essence of the English language, but also to further broaden the scope of the study of the speech in English, and also help to improve the speech enthusiasts The speech language skills, as well as to promote the University English reading and writing teaching. This thesis found: vocabulary difficulty of the inaugural speech of the President of the United States decreased from the end of the 18th century to the early 21st century, the six letters or more complex word still occupied lecture wording ratio of 1/4 or 1/3 of the 18th century the two U.S. presidential inauguration speech was significantly higher than the proportion of the use of long words in the back of five U.S. presidential inaugural address, while the average length of the word becomes shorter; functional vocabulary in 20 of the most commonly used words, occupy the top ten name; degree of formality of the U.S. presidential inauguration speech as more and more use of acronyms and pronouns, and the gradual reduction of the difficult words, abstract words and nouns use lower; negative words, the religious overtones vocabulary and empty language use strengthening presidents advocate help voters hearts resonate, resulting in inflammatory effect. In short, the purpose of diachronic change of the U.S. presidential inauguration speech vocabulary in order to discover changes in public political speech vocabulary. Meanwhile, we also hope that through this research not only be able to broaden the scope of the study of the public political speeches stylistic help the reader to better appreciate the style of the inaugural speech, at the same time improve the English language proficiency of public speaking enthusiasts. In addition, great help institutions of higher learning vocabulary teaching and the teaching of English speech.
