Abstract


This article investigated in full in the face of Western and Chinese culture and found the drawbacks of quantitative methods in the study of face. So this article using the qualitative methods such as opened-ended questionnaires, stories and interviews to study people’s case of the face, face-saving behavior and the evaluation of face. The results showed that:From elementary school to university, people’s understanding of face have changed greatly. From the ability of face to the friendship of face, and finally to their own face. And the face behavior have a development from simple to rich, from concrete to abstract, one-sided to the full.From the stories of face, we can see that college students generally experience a face-saving mode. Students’ face story involves three main areas: the feelings, the achievements, and self-growth. The relationship between people and environment decides the status of the face, and the understanding of the relationship constitute the sense of face. And there shows a gender differences from the story’s content and structure.From the answers of face, we can see the college students’ view on case face. Talk about self-face is very difficult to survive out of the situation, and usually with the status of the missing. No memory of the face more than not face has a more lasting memory of the case. People will pay more attention on the internal face.In short, the Chinese face-saving culture affects the behavior of the Chinese people. Play a role of face in the self-regulation is the pursuit of all knowledgeable people and it is our society’s expectations and requirements too.
